In 1978, Munger joined Berkshire Hathaway as vice-chairman and sat by Buffett’s side, quick with a quip or a sage piece of advice. Berkshire’s operating profits are expected to increase by 21% to $6,702 per Class A share, according to the FactSet estimates. Berkshire Hathaway reported a significant uptick in fourth-quarter operating earnings, which totaled $8.5 billion, up from $6.6 billion, or a 28% increase from a year ago. OMAHA, Nebraska — Warren Buffett said Saturday his designated successor Greg Abel will have the final say on Berkshire Hathaway's investing decisions when the Oracle of Omaha is no longer at the helm. Berkshire investing managers, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, both former hedge fund managers, have helped Buffett manage a small portion of the stock portfolio (about 10%) for about the last decade. There was speculation that they may take over that portion of the Berkshire CEO role when he is no longer able. But it seems, based on Buffett's latest comments, that Abel will have final decisions on all capital allocation — including stock picks. Berkshire acquired MidAmerican Energy in 1999 and Abel became CEO of the company in 2008, six years before it was renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2014.

When Warren Buffett kicks off Berkshire Hathaway 's annual shareholder meeting on Saturday, the absence of Charlie Munger will be on everyone's mind. The annual meeting will be exclusively broadcast on CNBC and livestreamed on CNBC.com. Vice Chairman of Non-Insurance Operations Greg Abel, Buffett's designated successor, will fill Munger's seat in the afternoon session, helping answer shareholder questions. "The tone of the meeting is certainly going to be a lot different without Charlie," said Steve Check, CEO of Check Capital Management and a longtime Berkshire shareholder.

But this year’s event will be the first without Munger, who died in November at age 99 — and comes amid growing questions about Berkshire post-Buffett, who’s 93. Buffett will have a different crew answering questions alongside him on Saturday. Berkshire’s vice chairmen, Greg Abel and Ajit Jain, will be on hand for much of the day. Shareholders most likely will be focused on what Abel, Buffett’s appointed successor as C.E.O. In Buffett’s annual letter to investors, he noted challenges to Berkshire’s biggest businesses, including the BNSF railroad (falling shipment volumes) and its utility business (forest fires).

Warren Buffett is about to release his must-read annual letter where he's expected to pay a heartwarming tribute to the late Charlie Munger. The 93-year-old chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway is slated to release his annual shareholder letter Saturday at 8:00 a.m. "Succession is a top-of-mind issue for many Berkshire investors," Cathy Seifert, Berkshire analyst at CFRA Research, said in a note. Jimmy Haslam, CEO of Pilot Flying J. and Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. The Haslam family on Tuesday said its Pilot Corporation had closed the sale of its remaining 20% ownership interest in truck-stop giant Pilot Travel Centers to Berkshire Hathaway . That settlement avoided what was scheduled to be a two-day trial beginning Jan. 8, with testimony from Berkshire Hathaway executive Greg Abel, the designated successor to company CEO Warren Buffett. CNBC has requested comment from Berkshire Hathaway, which in a regulatory filing last year listed the Haslams' noncontrolling interest in Pilot Travel Centers at a value of around $3.2 billion. PTC is the largest operator of travel centers in North America, with more than 750 locations under the Pilot and Flying J brands.

Berkshire Hathaway settled a billion-dollar lawsuit with the Haslam family over how Berkshire accounted for the value of Pilot Travel Centers, which would affect the price paid in a forced buyout of the family's remaining stake in that truck-stop giant, both sides said Sunday night. The Haslam family and its Pilot Corp. in the suit filed this fall alleged that Berkshire Hathaway improperly adopted a form of accounting of the value of Pilot Travel Centers that would have led to a sharply lower price Berkshire would pay to acquire the family's remaining 20% stake in PTC. Berkshire in turn had accused Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam of offering payments to PTC executives to boost the value of the company so that his family would get a bigger buyout from Berkshire, which controls PTC. The Haslam family and Pilot Corp. strongly denied those claims. Berkshire and Pilot Corp. in similar press statements Sunday night said that they had reached an agreement to fully settle the Delaware Chancery case.
